After studying
Furniture and Product Design at Nottingham Trent University Alexander
started his career working on the furniture collection at Procter-Rihl.
After eighteen months here he moved to architecture practice MCD
and in July 2002 Alexander decided to realise his own designs and
set up his own studio.
Alexander's
Clearcut Chair, launched at 100% Design 2001, was internationally
acclaimed and a finalist at the 2001 FX awards. Taylor also exhibited
at Sotheby's and at the Milan Furniture fair that year. In 2003
Alexander was commissioned by Alexander McQueen to design 'Look
Book' cases for all his new stores and was selected by Max Fraser
to feature in the influential DESIGN UK 2 publication. Later that
year he opened his studio at Oxo Tower Wharf on London's South Bank
making his range of innovative furniture and lighting available
to a wider audience.
Milan 2004 was
the first international launch of the 'Antlers' coat hook for London
manufacturer Thorsten van Elten along with a glass vase commissioned
and designed for an exhibition organised by the Italian company
Aqua di Parma. The Antlers coat hanger has since gone on to win
the Elle Decoration Home Accessory of the Year Award. 2004 also
saw the Launch of new work produced by Japanese manufacturer E&Y.
This work was launched in Tokyo during Design Week as well as a
folded aluminium light (included in the 'Twinkle Twinkle' show organised
by the British Council).
At 100% Design
2005, Hitch Mylius launched Alexander Taylor's hm44, lounge chair,
to great acclaim.
