Known as one
of the most prolific and wide ranging furniture designers working
within the British furniture industry today, Simon Pengelly has
developed products for the best UK manufacturers of contemporary
furniture.
Pengelly was
born in Henley in 1967. Learning
to make in his father's workshop, he became an award winning cabinetmaker
by the age of 15, going on to study at Rycotewood college and Kingston
Polytechnic, graduating in 1988.
After working
in the design studios of Conran Design group, Pengelly went on to
design for Habitat for three years, leaving in 1993 to establish
his own studio. Continuing his acclaimed relationship with Habitat,
Pengelly has designed a large amount of their best-ever-selling
ranges, making him one of the ‘most sold’ of British
designers.
Pengelly developed
his own range and launched himself as an independent designer at
the 1996 100% Design show in London, and since then has expanded
his portfolio by successfully designing for companies including
Allermuir, Isokon plus, MHF and Modus.
A pragmatic
approach to problem solving and his affinity with materials and
manufacturing processes, combined with a passionate desire to create
production furniture with ‘soul’, has attracted briefs
which have resulted in award-winning furniture that contain a wonderful
mix of understated design and clever engineering, with a trademark
timeless appeal and accessibility.
Pengelly has
received several design industry awards and nominations: for his
commitment to the British furniture industry he was awarded Best
Contributing Designer at the 2002 100% Design show.
